Touchy-Feely: Seoul

Caregiving was feminized and sexualized during industrialization, rendered invisible and unpaid under capitalism, delegated to women who are expected to always care for those in need. Because it often requires the touching of bodies, care work has been disdained and undervalued as inferior to the work of the intellect and industry. Since globalisation, care work is increasingly commodified, with migrant women from the Global South caring for bourgeois families in the Global North and poor women caring for wealthy women. The global economy would grind to a halt without care work, but the structure that separates it into the private sphere and exploits it is intensifying around the world.

Care for children, spouses, and the elderly, along with daily tasks like cleaning and cooking, requires creativity and imagination, and deep attentiveness to the needs and preferences of the cared-for. Grounded in bodied experiences of care work, Touchy-Feely relates interpersonal physical contact, touch, and tactility, with feminist curatorial practices convening artists, whose practices are embodied in their bodily work. Each exploring care and tactile experience in their way, these artists involve participants in shared encounters that explore new forms of togetherness and awareness.

Touchy-Feely began in August 2024 as an eco-feminist summer school initiated by Ji Yoon Yang and Baruch Gottlieb at West Den Haag in The Hague, The Netherlands. During a one-week intensive program, twenty participants experienced a series of encounters—touching one another, exchanging emotions and ideas, through different guided sessions each day, examining cultural differences and intra-feminist debates on art work, sex work and care work, and questioning how contemporary art institutions can offer safer spaces where physical intimacy can function as artistic practice. The program was a process of ruptures and repairs, leading to profound shifts in participants’ bodied sense of intimacy and relationality.

Under the guise of minimizing state intervention, neoliberalism has instrumentalized the state for capital accumulation, dismantling the foundations of the welfare state. In response, contemporary artists have often stepped in to attend to neglected social needs—through community-based or socially engaged art—for those abandoned by the “withdrawal of the state.” Paradoxically, many of these creative and imaginative initiatives, sustained by public arts funding, are coopted into reinforcing the dominant system.

Touchy-Feely: Seoul reflects the limitations and precarious institutional conditions of socially engaged contemporary art, challenging the standards for what is considered “good art” within the art system. Artistic practices involving physical touch confront deeply embedded desires and fears, revulsions and curiosities, learned taboos and cultural repressions. Drawing from the diverse cultural norms and constraints surrounding touch around the world, Touchy-Feely seeks to cultivate community in which artists and participants share tactile experiences, distanced from the logic of productive labor.

Throughout a two-month exhibition, a series of workshops, screenings, and discussions will continuously transform the exhibition space. Rather than presenting artwork as a fixed and finalized object, Touchy-Feely: Seoul embraces a flexible practice shaped through collective participation and ongoing appropriation and transformation. From dyeing fabric with seaweed to inscribing personal memories of food into clay, and exploring one another’s bodies through everyday objects, the project invites tactile engagement as a shared creation. At a time when we are all pressured to become disconnected and to commodify ourselves, shared artistic practices involving physical contact might cultivate space for political resistance, solace and hope.

돌봄 노동은 자본주의 체제 안에서 여성이 사랑으로 실천해야 하는 무급 노동으로 구분된다. 아이나 남편, 노인을 돌보는 행위, 청소와 요리 같은 재생산 노동인 돌봄 노동은 가정주부인 여성의 일로 성적 대상화되어 산업화와 함께 개발되었다. 세계화 이후 이는 글로벌 사우스의 이주 여성이 글로벌 노스의 부르주아 가정을 돌보거나, 가난한 여성이 부유한 여성을 돌보는 상품으로 재편되었다. 재생산 노동 없이는 어떠한 생산 노동도 불가능하지만, 이를 사적 영역으로 구분하여 착취하는 구조는 전 세계에서 진행 중이다.

하지만 돌봄 노동을 적절하게 수행하기 위해서는 많은 창의력과 상상력이 요구된다. 돌봄을 받는 이의 필요와 선호를 이해하기 위해선 세심한 배려와 이해가 필요하기 때문이다. 돌봄 노동에서 주요한 감각은 촉각이다. 돌봄 노동을 통한 체화된 경험을 기반으로 ≪터치-필리≫는 촉감, 만지기 같은 사람 사이의 신체적 접촉을 페미니즘적 큐레이팅과 연결 짓는다. 필라테스, 마사지 같은 전문적인 서비스 산업에서 활동하며 예술적 실천을 이어가는 이들과, 저마다의 방식으로 돌봄 노동과 촉각적 경험에 관한 예술 실천을 진행 중인 이들이 참여자와 함께 신체적 접촉에 대한 새로운 경험을 나눈다.

이 프로젝트는 2024년 8월 양지윤과 바루흐 고틀립이 네덜란드 헤이그의 웨스트 덴 하그에서 기획한 에코페미니즘 썸머스쿨로 시작되었다. 썸머스쿨 기간인 일주일은 스무 명의 참여자가 매일 다른 강연자의 가이드에 따라 서로를 만지고 수많은 감정을 나누는 특별한 시간이었다. 성장 과정에서 부모와 충분히 나누지 못했던 신체적 접촉, 성 노동에 대한 문화적 차이와 페미니스트 간의 입장 차이, 신체적 접촉을 예술 실천으로 수행할 때 현대 예술 기관이 안전한 공간을 제공한다는 의미에 대한 실험이기도 했다. 다양한 충돌과 치유의 과정이었고 일주일 후 참여자의 서로에 대한 유대감과 친밀함은 전혀 다른 것이 되어 있었다.

국가의 시장 개입을 최소화한다는 명분 하에, 실은 자본의 이윤 축적을 위한 국가로 변신한 신자유주의 체제는 복지국가의 붕괴를 가져왔다. 현대 예술가들은 공동체 예술이나 사회 참여 예술 같은 형태로 국가의 돌봄 밖에 놓인 이들에 대한 사회적 서비스를 제공해 왔다. 하지만 공적 기금을 지원받아 운영되는 이러한 예술 활동은, 역설적으로 주류 체제를 공고히 하는 역할을 한다. 예술가들의 창의성과 상상력을 발휘해 사회적 필요를 일시적으로 메울 뿐이다.

≪터치-필리: 서울≫은 사회적 실천으로서의 현대 예술의 한계와 불안정한 제도적 상태를 반영하며, 미술 체제에서 ‘좋은 예술’이라고 평하는 기준을 어지럽힌다. 신체적 접촉을 예술적으로 실천하는 행위는 욕망과 두려움, 혐오감과 호기심, 그리고 많은 학습된 금기와 문화적 억압과 맞서는 일일 수 있다. 전 세계적으로 다양한 접촉의 문화가 갖는 각기 다른 가능성과 한계를 기반으로, ≪터치-필리: 서울≫는 생산 노동과는 거리를 둔 촉각적 경험을 참여자와 예술가가 함께 나누는 일시적 공동체를 만드는 것을 목표로 한다.

두 달이라는 전시 기간 동안 워크샵, 스크리닝, 토론 등 다양한 형태의 참여가 전시 공간을 지속적으로 변화시킬 것이다. 고정되고 완성된 견고한 예술이 아닌, 함께 참여하여 변화하는 유연한 예술 실천을 공유한다. 이는 해조류로 천을 염색하고 음식에 대한 사적 경험을 흙에 새기며 서로의 신체를 일상의 사물로 만지는 행위를 포함한다. 우리 모두가 단절되고 스스로 상품화될 것을 강요받는 지금, 신체적 접촉을 예술적 실천으로 공유하는 것이 정치적 저항의 형태로 작동할 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
