무브 온 아시아 2018

Inaugurated in 2004, Move on Asia is an exhibition which brings together moving image works on various subjects selected by a collective of curators based in Asia. This exhibition represents a collective effort of the contemporary Asian art community to proactively respond against conventional art world practices where art exhibitions are exploited to promote national interests and Asian-born artists are categorized by their nationalities. Moving past the modernist narrative of nation-states, the exhibition is an artistic attempt to introduce and understand the complexity and layers behind the concept of Asia which bases itself on cultural heterogeneity.

The theme of Move on Asia 2018 centers on the online and offline spaces, the current reality muddled with the internet and the physical world, and the post-digital environment “after” digital. This environment is by no means neutral but possesses a tendency to influence human senses and sociocultural consciousness. Furthermore, Asia today has begun to establish a new identity for itself amidst the fundamental expansion of globalism and the dominance of neoliberalism. The once closed-off and ethnocentric Asia is now in the past, with the new Asia being redefined by its economic value and booming popular culture industry. This exhibition examines new artistic tendencies in the production of moving images after the era of digital technology through works of contemporary Asian artists.

Postnational. The moving images today are appropriating cultural symbols from the past defined by local aesthetics to create new and different narratives. Korakrit Arunanondchai’s Painting with History in a Room Filled with People with Funny Names 3 juxtaposes images of Bangkok’s high-rise buildings, ancient Buddhist temples and Asian people wearing jeans and bleached hair, against the background of hip hop music narrating in Thai and French. Wong Ping’s animation Who’s the Daddy explores the themes of sexuality, fetish and human boundaries through an encounter with a woman on an online dating app. While inspired by the bright colors and aesthetics of pop art, the animation examines contemporary issues shared by the young generation across nationalities.

Hybrid. The participating artists in the exhibition appropriate and adopt into their work the ways through which moving image is consumed in business branding or popular culture in the era of neoliberalism. Adopting the format of a corporate marketing presentation, Baden Pailthorpe’s Pitch Deck introduces moving image as a means to attract potential investors to a business based on cultural capital. Ahmet Öğüt takes the format of Korean animation films for his work United, which commemorates Lee Han-yeol and Enes Ata, two victims who lost their lives in protests in Korea and Turkey, respectively. Hell Bovine and Pony by Woonghyun Kim delves into the culture of “Bronies”– a massive fandom of adults obsessed with the “My Little Pony” franchise – and overlaps the images with those of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un.

This exhibition is also presented as an experiment on the viewing experience of moving images inside a white cube. Instead of juxtaposing images side by side with multiple projectors, the exhibition is presented in the form of a movie theater, which is perhaps the most conventional setting for viewing moving images. There has never been a time when the value of “form as content” has been more emphasized than the postdigital society today. Move on Asia 2018 examines the current trends of excessive image editing and appropriation of visual conventions, and represents the social phenomenon through art.

2004년 시작한 ‹무브 온 아시아›는 아시아에서 활동하는 큐레이터들이 각 주제 아래 무빙 이미지를 선정하여 하나의 전시를 만드는 콜렉티브적인 전시다. 이는 현대 미술 전시를 국가적 차원에서 민족 국가 건립의 홍보 도구로 사용하거나 아시아 태생의 예술가들을 국적으로 분류하는 과거 관습에 대해 아시아 현대 예술 커뮤니티가 자주적으로 대응하는 방식이다. 민족-국가라는 근대 서사를 넘어서 문화 이질성에 기반한 아시아라는 개념이 갖는 복잡성과 다층성을 함께 이해하고 소개하려는 예술적 실천이다.

‹무브 온 아시아 2018›은 온라인과 오프라인 공간, 인터넷과 물리적 세계가 뒤섞인 현실, 디지털 ‘이후’의 포스트-디지털 환경을 그 주제로 한다. 이 환경은 중립적이지 않다. 인간의 감각이나 사회 문화적 인식에 영향을 미치는 경향성을 갖는다. 또한 글로벌리즘의 근본적 확장과 신자유주의의 대대적 점유 속에서 아시아는 지금 또다른 정체성을 구축하기 시작했다. 배타적인 자민족 중심주의에 물든 아시아는 사라지고, 경제적 가치와 대중 문화 산업 시장에 의해 재편된 아시아들이 만들어지고 있다. 이 전시는 디지털 테크놀로지 이후의 무빙 이미지 제작에서 아시아 예술가들이 갖는 경향성을 살펴보고자 한다.

탈국가적이다. 지역적 미감으로 대변된 과거 문화의 상징 기호들은 지금 무빙 이미지의 소재들로 전면적으로 사용되며 또 다른 내러티브를 구성한다. 코라크릿 아루나논드차이의 ‹재미있는(기이한) 이름을 가진 사람들로 가득 찬 방에서 역사로 그린 그림 3›에서는 불어와 태국어 내레이션이 섞인 힙합 음악과 함께, 진jean을 입고 머리를 염색한 아시아인들, 방콕의 고층 건물과 불교 사찰이 병치된다. 웡 핑의 원색의 팝아트 미감을 담은 애니메이션인 ‹아빠가 누구니›는 데이팅 앱에서 만난 여자를 통해 경험하는 페티시, 섹슈얼리티의 문제, 인간의 경계에 대해, 국적을 초월하여 동시대 젊은 세대가 갖는 이슈들을 여과 없이 드러낸다.

혼종적이다. 참여 예술가들은 신자유주의 시대 비즈니스 브랜딩이나 대중문화 차원에서 통용되는 무빙 이미지의 소비 방식들을 차용하여 제 작업 제작의 방식으로 사용한다. 기업 마케팅용 프리젠테이션의 양식을 차용한 베이든 페일솔프의 ‹피치 데크›는 문화 자본에 기반을 둔 비지니스의 잠재 투자자를 설득하기 위한 무빙 이미지를 소개한다. 아흐멧 오굿의 ‹단결›은 한국 만화라는 형식을 차용해 한국과 터키의 시위 과정에서 목숨을 잃은 이한열과 에네스 아타를 추모한다. 김웅현의 ‹헬보바인과 포니›는 마이 리틀 포니를 광적으로 소비하는 성인들을 일컫는 브로니brony 문화에 김정은을 합성한다.

전시는 또한 무빙 이미지를 화이트 큐브에서 관람하는 방식에 대한 실험이기도 하다. 화이트 큐브 전시 공간에 무빙 이미지 작업을 병렬적으로 프로젝션하는 대신, 무빙 이미지를 관람하는 관습화된 방식인 영화관의 방식을 활용한다. 포스트-디지털 사회만큼이나 형식이 내용을 전달한다는 가치만이 전면화된 사회는 없는 듯하다. ‹무브 온 아시아 2018›은 제도화된 형식의 차용과 과도한 이미지 합성이라는 사회적 현상을 예술로서 재현한다.
