Kazunari Hattori: A Natural Activist

“It is slanted” is the idea that comes to mind when I view Kazunari Hattori’s work. Slanted angles always audaciously invade some parts of Hattori’s designs, such as the fonts, vectors, or layouts; sometimes they are in the details, while at times they invade the overall entirety of a work. This characteristic is found in his logotype design for the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in Tokyo, and in the literary magazine Mayonaka. It can also be found in the lines that compose his polygonal graphics, and in the manner in which he arranged the copywriting for the Kewpie Half mayonnaise advertisements.

Why are they “slanted?” Hattori seems to be casting his skeptical eyes toward the “correctness” that a “normal font style” nonchalantly clads itself in. He aims to make “slanted” angles exist “correctly” in themselves, based on his view that there is no such thing as an a priori determined correctness, or a slanted font that could be considered an ex-post existence created by merely slanting a normal font.

As you might have guessed, Hattori thinks that a “design” is a techne/technique that can equalize all the elements used in it. Thus, the unique feature about his design works is that all the elements are equalized: a normal font style and slanted styles; colors and forms; letters and photos; and commodity images and non-commodity images. All are placed delightfully together. These engaging images derive from Hattori’s humorous sense of form that is unique to him. But there is more to it than that. His design work conveys a delightful feeling because every element in it is aware (or appears to be aware) that each and every element is seen as existing on an equal basis.

Some “slanted” angles in his designs are invisible but perceptible; that is, they involve “gravity.” In a state in which slanted angles possess both vertical and horizontal elements, gravity is always active. There is no way for Hattori, who is so fond of “slants,” to bypass the invisible force of gravity. In fact, in the fashion magazine Ryuko Tsushin, all the editions in which he oversaw art direction were filled with images that led readers to blurt out, “Do I remember gravity correctly?” In one of his designs, one sees a handbag standing straight up in an unlikely way, before then realizing that it was suspended from a ceiling and photographed in an upside-down position. In another work, one end of a book is tied to the string of a balloon and floating slightly off the ground (this work cleverly used a combination technique of slanted lines and gravitation).

Hattori has no intention of escaping from gravitational forces in his designs. Being well aware of the limitations of gravity, he turns the tables and attempts to reset the perceptions, thoughts and sensations that have been ingrained within us. His aim is to create a state of non-gravity rather than that of zero gravity. Thus, viewers most likely perceive a pleasant sense of instability as they stand before his images that are filled with the force of gravity but which also float in the air. In short, this sensation leads us to re-acknowledge our own sensitivities.

In the world we live in today, existing symbols and our senses are controlled by telecommunication technologies and audiovisual media. Moreover, through marketing and customer profiling, our awareness and even our emotions have become “marketized.” “Symbols,” which are supposed to create opportunities for us to connect with others and the world via our imagination and sensitivities, have been exploited by “cultural capitals” and have lapsed into a dysfunctional state. The French philosopher Bernard Stiegler describes such a world as “symbolic misery.”

What should designers do in such a state? If a designer is essentially well attuned to the times, he/she would criticize the design world (which would include his/her own self) for causing this state of “symbolic misery.” Such critics would advocate heading toward possessing a long-term perspective to adjust the relationship between the accelerating desire of business enterprises and cultural capitals with the individual desires of people. But upon taking a general view of the actual state we are in today, quite a few designs have resulted in alienating people from the acts of thinking and perceiving, such as the anonymously created designs that have won popularity in recent years.

I thought about Hattori’s view of this situation, but I could not reach a definite conclusion. If asked, “Does he dislike putting his thoughts into words?” then I would say, yes, he probably does. But the reason behind this is not because he lacks a distinct point of view but because he values multiple perspectives.

In other words, Hattori is determined to arrive at a “concept” via his designs. This might sound unconventional, but in fact, a “concept” involves multiplicity, although it is often misunderstood that its main feature lies in creating a clear understanding. Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari argued that “it [a concept] is a multiplicity.” They also stated that “the concept is the contour, the configuration, the constellation of an event to come.”

The “concept,” as defined in those quotations, suggests an idealistic state of design. A “configuration” is created through arranging different “figures,” and a “constellation” is a shapeless form that is originated through the arrangement of many “stella” (Latin for “star”). This idea can generate events to connect people. We once had the sensitivity to discover moderate relationships among the countless stars that drift about in the boundless sky, and to apply poetic names to those stars. We used to believe that people who lived far away must have also found the same forms in the same starlit sky. It is essential for us today to revitalize that divine sensitivity.

Hattori’s ongoing cover designs for the monthly journal Gekkan Hyakka are his studies on the multiple nature of the “concept” of a “cat.” A variety of cats are designed under limited conditions. Those images include a meowing cat, hissing cat and growling cat. I personally like some of the cat designs but am not fond of some others. But that makes no difference. Reminding myself that the publisher of those magazines is Heibonsha Ltd. Publishers, which has long been engaged in publishing encyclopedias (seen as an aggregate of concepts), helped me confirm the difference between the idea of multiplicity and my own preferences. This allowed me to slightly recover my connection with the world on an individual level.

In the above-described manner, Hattori endeavors through his own designs to release the aggregated “mass” state that has become substantiated by designs over the years. Because he loves the medium of design, he pardons its past offences and rescues it from its current state, aiming to resolve the problem of the “mass” to “an aggregate of individuals.” This is the reason why he is affectionate toward the “small” people who are trying to reach out to others. He has undertaken cover designs for the small-circulation magazine here and there, book cover designs, and advertisement designs for small-scale art museums. The Kewpie Half mayonnaise advertisement is another such example. It utilized Shou Akiyama’s copywriting, “I sometimes think about myself,” in the form of hesitant handwriting. This expression was not only aimed at conveying a sense of sweetness, but also to highlight words that derived from nothing other than a sense of “I.”

Even though I hope to have elucidated Hattori’s design in this essay, if he were to read it, he would probably slightly open his sleepy eyes and then say, “It that so? You might be right,” while giving me a smile. Kazunari Hattori is thoroughly a natural activist. His designs are thus tossed over to us as opportunities that we can freely respond to.
