<어스시 토크+스크리닝>은 서울, 타이페이, 샌프란시스코, 욕야카르타에서 활동 중인 5인의 여성 큐레이터가 에코페미니즘으로 예술 실천에 관해 이야기합니다. 이와 관련한 아티스트의 영상 작업을 추천하여 스크리닝 프로젝트와 함께 소개합니다. 스크리닝은 샌프란시스코를 시작으로, 타이페이와 서울에서 진행합니다.

온라인 토크 1. 재키 임, 미래를 제시하기: 과학과 공상과학 소설 속 위기를 헤쳐나가는 삶의 탐구
일시: 11월 17일(금) 오후 2시
내용: 아티스트 소피아 코르도바Sofia Cordova의 작업, 어슐러 르 귄의 어스시 사이클Earthsea cycle, N.K. 제미신의 브로큰 어스The Broken Earth 3부작을 다루며 과학과 공상과학 소설을 통해 삶의 위기를 헤쳐나가는 방법을 살펴본다. 기후가 변화함에 따라 우리는 항상 ‘뉴 노멀 New Normal’을 찾아 왔다. 코르도바의 작업 는 지금으로부터 500년 후를 상상한다. 지구와 우리와의 관계를 탐구하고 지구의 역사를 제시한다. 이는 식민주의와 자본주의, 기후 변화, 이주에 대한 비판적 고찰이다. 기후 위기는 우리의 상상력을 초월하고 있다. 우리는 기술에 있어 새롭고 참신한 것을 강조하지만 우리 일상에서 지속될 것들에 대한 인지는 미흡하다. 여러 실패한 제도 속, 세상에 트러블을 일으키는 과학과 공상과학 소설을 통해 예술에서 정의로운 세상을 다시 상상할 수 있는 방법을 나눈다.

재키 임
재키 임은 캘리포니아 오크랜드를 기반으로 한 큐레이터이자 작가, 에디터이다. 현재 샌프란시스코 아트 커미션 갤러리의 큐레이터로 활동하고 있다. 또한 아론 하버Aaron Harbour와 케빈 크루거Kevin, Krueger와 함께 샌프란시스코의 에트 알앤드 에트알 에세트라Et al. and Et al., etc.의 공동설립자이자 디렉터로 활동하고 있기도 하다. 이외에도 와티스 인스티튜트 오브 켄템포러리 아트Wattis Institute of Contemporary Art, 퀸스 네일즈Queens Nails, 더 랩The Lab, 임포턴트 프로젝트Important Projects, 로얄 논서치 갤러리Royal NoneSuch Gallery, 홀리데이 포에버Holiday Forever 등에서 전시를 진행하기도 했다. 재키 임은 밀즈 컬리지에서 미술사학으로 학사 학위를, 캘리포니아 아트 컬리지에서 큐레이팅 전공으로 석사 학위를 취득했으며, 현재 캘리포니아 아트 컬리지와 밀즈 컬리지의 강연자로 활동하고 있다. 

온라인 토크 2. 미라 아스린티야스, 모든 방해꾼의 어머니: 마녀, 여신, 대지의 수호자
일시: 11월 17일(금) 오후 4시
내용: 강연은 위험하고 두려운 파괴자이자 마녀 과부인 랑다의 이야기를 출발점으로 삼는다. 발리의 무덤의 여왕이자 흑마술의 수호자로 여겨지는 랑다의 이야기는 가부장적 권력을 위협하는 모성적 힘이 불순종적 여성상으로 여겨지는 전형적인 예시이다. 랑다가 가진 모계적 구축을 중심으로, 아티스트 레일라 스티븐스Leyla Stevens의 작업을 초청하여 28분의 비디오 <GROH GOH(랑다를 위한 리허설)>(2023)을 선보인다. 실비아 페데리치는 『캘리번과 마녀』에서 ‘마녀’라는 캐릭터가 곧 여성 반란의 상징으로 채택되었다고 말한다. 결국 마녀는 길들여지지 않고, 즐겁고, 지적이며, 명확한 성 정체성에 얽매이지 않는 혁명적인 사람이다. 강연은 이에 기반해 인도네시아 농경 사회에서 다산의 여신으로 추앙받는 어머니, 숲을 보호하는 신들의 신화, 인도네시아 열도 전역의 어머니 활동가 및 대지 수호자처럼 인도네시아의 문화적 에코페미니즘과 관련된 어머니 인물들의 서사와 신화를 다룬다.

미라 아스린티야스
미라 아스린티야스는 독립 큐레이터이자 작가로 활동하고 있다. 2017년에는 암스테르담에서, 2019년에는 다카르에서 드 아펠 큐레이터 프로그램과 RAW 아카데미 6: CURA를 수료했다. 연구 활동의 중심에 지식 시스템을 탈식민화하고, 생태적 지속가능성을 증진하며, 식민주의의 흔적을 조사하는 것을 두고 있다. 지역적 맥락에 뿌리를 둔 다중심적 지식으로부터 다시 배운다. 드 아펠 아트 센터De Appel Art Center, 스테델리크 미술관Stedelijk Museum, 산드레토 레바우덴고 재단Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, KKF Yogyakarta, ISCP New York, MAIIAM 현대미술관MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, 아워 뮤지엄Our Museum, HMK Hoorn 등의 미술 기관에서 전시 및 공공 프로그램을 큐레이팅했다.

Online Talk 1. Jackie Im: It offers a future: exploring living through crises in science and speculative fictions
Through the artwork of Sofia Cordova, Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea cycle, and N.K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy, this talk explores how we can navigate living through crises through science and speculative fiction. As the climate changes, we have always searched for a ‘New Normal’. Cordova’s work imagines 500 years from now. It explores our relationship with the earth and presents a history of the planet. It is a critical examination of colonialism and capitalism, climate change, and migration. The climate crisis has overtaken our imagination. We emphasize what is new and novel in technology, but fail to recognize what is enduring in our daily lives. Through the lens of science and science fiction, we will discuss how art can reimagine a just world in the midst of failed institutions.

Jackie Im
Jackie Im is a curator, writer, and editor based in Oakland, CA. She currently serves at the Associate Curator of the San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries. She is also the co-founder and Director of Et al. and Et al., etc. in San Francisco. Im has organized exhibitions at the Wattis Institute of Contemporary Art (SF), Queens Nails (SF), The Lab (SF), Important Projects (Oakland), Holiday Forever (Jackson Hole, WY), and SFAC Galleries. Her writing has appeared in Fillip Magazine, Art Practical, Curiously Direct, and various exhibition catalogues. She holds a BA in Art History from Mills College and an MA in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts.

Online Talk 2. Mother of All Disruptors: Witches, Goddess and Land Defenders
This lecture will take the story of Rangda, the dangerous and feared disruptor witch widow, as a starting point for addressing the narrative and myth of the mother figures in its relation to cultural ecofeminism in Indonesia– from the celebrated Goddess of Fertility in Javanese agricultural society, the myth of forest-protecting deities, to the stories of mother activists and defenders of the land across the archipelago. The story of Rangda is a typical example of how a matrilineal force that threatens and disrupts patriarchal power is widely portrayed as the ‘other’ and undesirable disobedient female figure. For the Earthsea Screening program, I invited artist Leyla Stevens to present her 28” video, GROH GOH (Rehearsal for Rangda) (2023). In the video, the artist re-imagines performance lineages surrounding the mythological figure of the Rangda, Balinese queen of the graveyard and patroness of black magic. In Caliban and the Witch, Federici notes that in the wake of the feminist movement, the character of ‘the witch’ was soon adopted as a symbol of female revolt (Federici 2004, p164). Eventually, it represents the untamed, joyous, intelligent, revolutionary people unbounded by definitive gender identity.

Mira Asriningtyas
Mira Asriningtyas works as an independent curator and writer. She completed the De Appel Curatorial Program in 2017 (Amsterdam) and RAW Academie 6: CURA in 2019 (Dakar). The idea of learning back from polycentric knowledge rooted in the local context as an attempt to decolonize the knowledge system, promote ecological sustainability, and further investigate the remaining trace of colonialism have been central to her current research practice. She has curated exhibition and public programs off-site and in art institutions such as De Appel Art Center (Amsterdam); Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam); Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin); KKF (Yogyakarta); ISCP (New York); MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum (Chiang Mai); Our Museum (Taipei); HMK (Hoorn) among others. Her essays have been published internationally in books, exhibition catalogs, monographs, journals, and online publications, including Ocula, PARSE Journal, and Stedelijk Studies. In 2011, she co‐founded LIR Space, an art space that turned nomadic into LIR (curator collective). In 2017, she started a biennial site‐specific project titled “900mdpl” in Kaliurang, an aging resort village under Mt.Merapi volcano. The program invites local and international artists for a research residency and creates a socially engaged archive of the space presented as a multi-site exhibition, transient museums, and publications. The 1st edition (2017) presented portraits of the community and their living space. The 2nd edition (2019) attempted to pinpoint the small village within the map of Indonesia’s more extensive history. The 3rd edition (2022) was presented in two cycles, looking upon the relationship between mythology and how it affects the area’s environmental sustainability.”
