Touchy-Feely: Seoul is a project that intertwines bodily experience, especially touch and tactility, with radical forms of social practice. The English expression “touchy-feely” refers to individuals considered to be excessively demonstrative in their physical expressions of intimacy, reflecting a sense of discomfort with touch and proximity in modern society. How people respond to or regulate physical touch is largely determined by their cultural upbringing and social norms. Such responses, of course, are deeply entangled with culturally embedded taboos and forms of repression associated with feelings of pleasure, relief, shame, or unease.

The act of physical touch is materially grounded, yet resistant to visual presentation. The tactile is not isolated—it is entangled with sensations of warmth, scent, movement, and sound, evoking a range of emotions including desire and fear, curiosity and anxiety, pleasure and ambivalence. Touchy-Feely: Seoul brings together artistic practices, performances, and workshops that interrogate the socio-cultural attitudes towards physical contact.

The pandemic allowed for a heightened sensitivity to the importance of physical intimacy and care work. Caregiving has historically been invisible and unpaid in capitalist economies, delegated to women as a natural extension of love. Acts of care for children, spouses, and the elderly, along with reproductive work like cleaning and cooking, were feminized and sexualized during industrialization. Since globalisation, it has been reconfigured as a commodity, with migrant women from the Global South caring for bourgeois families in the Global North and poor women caring for wealthy women. No productive labour is possible without reproductive labour, but the structure that separates it into the private sphere and exploits it is ongoing around the world.

This project began in August 2024, at the eco-feminist summer school initiated by Ji Yoon Yang and Baruch Gottlieb at West Den Haag in The Hague, The Netherlands. During a one-week intensive program, twenty participants experienced a series of encounters — touching one another, exchanging emotions, through a different guided session each day. These sessions served as a space of dialogue and experimentation to revisit the lack of physical intimacy in childhood and family life, to examine cultural differences and intra-feminist debates on sex work abd care work, and to question how contemporary art institutions can offer safe spaces where physical intimacy can function as artistic practice. The program was a process of ruptures and repairs, leading to a profound shift in participants’ embodied sense of intimacy and relationality. In a world that enforces isolation and commodification, touch becomes a form of resistance—a gesture of affective connection, solace, and shared hope.

Opening in June 2025 at Alternative Space LOOP, Touchy-Feely: Seoul will be an expanded and locally recontextualized iteration of the project.  To introduce the Touchy-Feely project and to facilitate a public discussion on how its approach can be sensitively adapted to the Korean context, we welcome you to a Warm Up Event to be held on April 19, 2025. The event will also serve to announce our commissioning open call for new artistic works for Touchy-Feely: Seoul. Anyone engaged with tactile experience, the body, or emotions — such as dancers, choreographers, artists, perfumers, yoga and pilates instructors, bodyworkers—is encouraged to take part.

4월 19일(토) 오후 2시, <터치-필리: 서울> 워밍업 이벤트에 초대합니다.

<터치-필리: 서울>은 접촉, 촉감 같은 신체적 경험을 급진적인 사회적 실천과 연결짓는 프로젝트다. ‘터치-필리’라는 영어 표현은 현대 사회에서 신체적 접촉이나 친밀감의 신체적 표현이 과한 사람을 불편하게 여기는 사회적 정서를 말한다. 만지기/촉각을 대하는 태도나 경계는 사회나 문화에 따라 매우 다르다. 물론 이것은 즐거움과 안도감, 수치심과 우려 등 다양한 감정과 연결된 사회 별로 학습된 금기와 문화적 억압을 내포한다. 

신체적 접촉은 물질적 행위이자 시각적 재현이 어려운 행위다. 촉각적 경험은 온도, 냄새, 움직임, 사운드 같은 다양한 감각 체계와 연결되어 있으며, 욕망과 두려움, 호기심과 불편함, 즐거움과 어색함 같은 다양한 감정을 불러 일으키는 행위다. <터치-필리:서울>은 신체적 접촉이 갖는 문화 사회적 접점에 대응하는 예술 작업, 워크샵, 퍼포먼스와 강연들을 소개한다. 

팬데믹 기간은 신체적 접촉과 돌봄 노동의 중요성에 대해 민감하게 인식할 수 있는 기회였다. 돌봄 노동은 대부분 자본주의 체제 안에서 여성이 사랑으로 실천해야 하는 무급 노동으로 구분되었다. 아이나 남편, 노인을 돌보는 행위, 청소와 요리 같은 재생산 노동인 돌봄 노동은 가정 주부인 여성의 일로 성적 대상화되어 산업화와 함께 개발되었다. 세계화 이후 이는 글로벌 사우스의 이주 여성이 글로벌 노스의 부르주아 가정을 돌보는, 가난한 여성이 부유한 여성을 돌보는 상품으로 재편되었다. 재생산 노동 없이는 어떠한 생산 노동도 불가능하지만, 이를 사적 영역으로 구분하여 착취하는 구조는 전세계에서 진행 중이다. 

이 프로젝트는 2024년 8월 양지윤과 바루흐 고틀립이 네덜란드 헤이그의 웨스트 덴하그에서 기획한 에코페미니즘 썸머스쿨로 시작되었다. 썸머스쿨 기간인 일주일은 스무 명의 참여자가 매일 다른 강연자의 가이드에 따라 서로를 만지고 수많은 감정을 나누는 특별한 시간이었다. 성장 과정에서 부모와 충분히 나누지 못했던 신체적 접촉, 성 노동에 대한 문화적 차이와 페미니스트 간의 입장 차이, 신체적 접촉을 예술 실천으로 수행할 때 현대 예술 기관이 안전한 공간을 제공한다는 의미에 대한 실험이기도 했다. 다양한 충돌과 치유의 과정이었고 일주일 후 참여자의 서로에 대한 유대감과 친밀함은 전혀 다른 것이 되어 있었다. 서로가 단절되고 상품화될 것을 강요받는 현재 사회에서 신체적 접촉을 통해 감정을 공유하는 것은, 개인 간의 위안과 희망을 나누는 정치적 저항의 형태가 된다.  

2025년 6월부터 대안공간 루프에서 <터치-필리: 서울>은 한국이라는 컨텍스트에 맞추어 조율하여 확장된 버전이다. 이에 앞서 4월 19일 <워밍업 이벤트>를 진행 한다. 웨스트 덴하그에서의 <터치-필리> 프로젝트를 소개하고, 한국적 상황에 대한 감수성과 고려해야 할 점들에 관해 다양한 배경의 참여자들과 함께 논의한다. 더불어 <터치-필리: 서울>을 위한 새로운 예술 작업을 커미션하기 위해 마련한 공개 이벤트이기도 하다. 무용가, 안무가, 가수, 조향사, 요가와 필라테스 강사, 지압사 등 촉각, 신체, 감정과 관련된 모든 사람이 이벤트에 참여하기를 기대한다.
